The Age produced an award-winning series of articles on liveability in 2005. The articles were produced in consultation with ACIL Tasman and Tract Consultants, who used a range of social, environmental and economic indicators to determine the liveability of Melbourne’s suburbs.


The Commission has examined a number of issues related to liveability in several of its completed inquiries, including the inquiries into regulatory barriers to regional development, regulation of the housing construction sector, and managing transport congestion. The Victorian Government's responses to these inquiries are provided here as background information:


The City of Melbourne has produced the following report which investigates liveability indicators to better understand ways in which cities and countries, particularly Melbourne, are ranked.

The Commission also appointed a number of consultants to assist with particular aspects of the inquiry

There has been considerable debate in the literature over the meaning of the term 'competitiveness'. Some of the more common uses of the term are outlined in the following web note.
