 Graham Evans

Graham Evans AO was appointed Chair of the Commission in 2004 prior to the appointment of Dr Butlin on 1 October 2008. Mr Evans has more than 30 years experience in the Commonwealth Government and in the private sector with BHP Billiton.

Mr Evans’ extensive experience in the Commonwealth Government included the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Treasury and the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, before he served as head of a number of departments, including the Department of Primary Industries and Energy and the Department of Transport and Communications between 1986 and 1995. He was also a Principal Private Secretary to Prime Minister Hawke.

After leaving the public sector, Mr Evans became the head of external affairs at BHP Billiton from 1995 to late 2003.

Mr Evans has held a number of directorships, including at Fosters Brewing, Australia Post and the former Telecom, and he has served on a number of government advisory bodies. He is currently on the councils of Leadership Victoria and Reconciliation Australia. At the Commission, Mr Evans has presided on inquiries into the regulation of regional development, transport congestion and the metropolitan retail water sector. He has contributed to inquiries into regulation of housing construction, the Labour and Industry Act 1958, food regulation, liveability and environmental regulation.
